What We Have Achieved
The main AEP committees have all been busy during the last year and a snapshot of what we have achieved is summarised below.
Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) - The AEP is set to be involved in yet another busy financial year as it starts Year 6 of the seven year Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) Programme. With only 2 years left before SRB funding runs out in 2004, there is no slowing down in project activity.
This year will see the continuation of some of the Programme's largest projects. A total of £264,000 SRB money is profiled to be spent this year on a number of different projects. This investment will lever in a matchfunding contribution of £852,600 from the public and private sectors this year. There will be at least 9 SRB projects this year and the AEP intends to approve another 4 or 5 new projects to start later in the year. Many of the 9 projects are existing ones that started 5 years ago at the beginning of the Programme and have now developed into successful initiatives. Overall this year, 100 new jobs will be created/ safeguarded, 3,000 training weeks provided and over 200 businesses advised.
Previously funded projects will continue to be monitored in Year 6 by the AEP. Many of these are still very active and successful. These include the developments at Shoreham Airport, Tungsten Manufacturing site at Southwick and Fishersgate Community Centre. These projects alone have attracted literally millions of pounds in matchfunding from the private and public sectors.
The AEP has also set up an Exit Strategy working party to look at what needs to be done as the end of the Programme draws nearer. The AEP will want to ask project managers and others involved in the SRB projects what they thought of the whole exercise in order to evaluate the impact of the SRB investment.
Marketing - Mostly through the work of the marketing committee, much has been achieved this year. A successful full business day and AGM was held on 26 September 2001 organised by the marketing committee. This included a collaborative project between local schools and engineering companies in the morning and an afternoon business advice session on cost saving initiatives. The evening was set aside for a talk and presentation on planning issues in Adur followed by the AGM.
In January an enjoyable New Year social event was organised by the marketing committee, centred on the theme 'The Roaring Twenties'. This was held at the Airport and was attended by members and business guests. A successful fund raising raffle for the AEP was held.
Other achievements during the year have included the redevelopment of the new AEP website, membership posters and project display boards.
Economic Regeneration - The Economic Regeneration committee has taken on a more active role in the last year as the business led lobbying voice on economic development and regeneration initiatives. This year, the committee has been actively involved in keeping abreast of and making comments on major development schemes in the area, such as the Cement works at Beeding. In addition, this committee has been involved in commenting on strategic documents and studies such as the South Coast Multi Modal Study, the West Sussex Structure Plan and SEEDA's Regional Economic Strategy. Over the last year or so, the committee has ensured the continued success of several SRB projects such as the Shoreham Town Centre project and the Lancing Business Park project.
The committee often invites guests to make presentations at committee meetings on certain topics, the last one being on Ropetackle and Shoreham Maritime by SEEDA. The committee is keen to attract new members and to increase the participation in its work in addition to attending meetings.
The Board - The Board has endorsed the work of the various committees during the year as well as carrying out some important work itself. In particular it completed a Declaration of Interests Register, which was sent to Company's House. The Board has also been involved in finding out more about future funding from SEEDA from the 'Single Pot' and recently sent comments and suggestions to SEEDA on where the AEP sees the future role of the Partnership within the local area. The Board agreed the Year 6 (2002/03) SRB Delivery Plan and discussed the use of the AEP member database. The Board has sent a representative to the newly formed Local Strategic Partnership. In addition to the above, the Board carries out its statutory functions of agreeing the financial reports produced by the Secretary.
